The Honest Truth
(Written by Ray Harris ©2009 SOCAN)

1. Today's the very first day, of the rest of your life -
I read that on a bathroom wall, scratched in with a knife -
I've read that many times before, probably right here -
I pondered that possibility, as I ordered my next beer.

Chorus:
Don't believe everything you read - 'cause it might not be right,
To get down to the honest truth, sometimes you have to lie,
Well I might have been born yesterday, but I wasn't born last night,
Heaven knows where the hell I'm bound,
But I'll get there when I die.

2. Do unto others, as you'd have them do unto you -
I read that in a bible, in a cheapass motel room -
I'd rather not say what I was doing there, if it's all the same -
But we sure did do unto each other, me and whats-her-name?

CHORUS

3. There's a sucker born everyday, so P.T. Barnum said -
Those words echoed in my ears, ever time I wed -
'Tween the freak show and the shell game, I nearly lost my mind -
Step right up and play young man, there's a winner every time.

CHORUS

CHORUS a capella + band comes back in on tag

(Well I might have been born yesterday, but I wasn't born last night,
Heaven knows where the hell I'm bound,
But I'll get there when I die.)
